How to compress an image to 1 MB
1 MB is enough for a near-full-resolution phone photo at a high JPG quality. Modern phone photos are usually 2 to 5 MB, so most need only a moderate quality reduction and a little resizing to fit. The tool starts at up to 3,840 pixels on the long edge, finds the highest quality under 1 MB, and shrinks the dimensions only if needed.
- Choose or drop one or more images above (on a phone, tap the box to pick from your gallery).
- Leave the target at 1 MB, or type your form's exact limit into Custom target.
- Each image is compressed on your device; the result shows its exact size and a green tick when it fits.
- Download one file, or all of them as a ZIP.
Where the 1 MB limit comes up
Upload caps on forms, marketplaces and social apps. Typical places:
- Upload forms with a 1 MB per-file limit
- Marketplace listings and classified ads
- Attachments for support tickets and insurance claims
- Photos for printing at moderate sizes
What fits in 1 MB
Most phone photos fit at 3,000–3,840 px on the long edge with quality 80–90.
Watch out: Some forms say 1 MB but mean 1,000,000 bytes, others 1,048,576. The tool aims at 1,000,000 bytes so it passes either check.
How the tool decides
It first tries a high quality at the largest size allowed. If that is too big, it searches for the highest JPG (or WebP) quality that still fits. Only when quality would have to drop below about 50 does it reduce the pixel dimensions instead, because a slightly smaller sharp photo looks better than a full-size blocky one. The target is treated as 1,000,000 bytes so it passes checks that count a kilobyte as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
Need an exact pixel size too? Resize first with the image resizer or crop with the image cropper, then compress here. For the background on why photos are so large, read the image compression guide or how to reduce image size for email.
