On a Mac, ⌘ + V. You can also drop an image file here.

Why Print Screen never gives you a file

On Windows, the Print Screen key copies the screen to the clipboard and nothing more. Windows + Shift + S does the same for a selection. The image only becomes a file when something pastes it and saves it — traditionally Paint or the Snipping Tool, which both default to PNG. This page is that paste target, and it saves JPG.

JPG or PNG for a screenshot?

JPG is the right choice when the screenshot has to fit an email, a form with a size limit or a chat app: it is typically a fifth of the PNG size. Keep quality at 92 or above for text. For diagrams with thin lines or a transparent background, PNG stays sharper. Already have screenshot files saved? Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about image conversion.

Press Print Screen (or Windows + Shift + S for a selection), come to this page and press Ctrl + V. The capture appears as a JPG preview with its file size, and one click saves it. Print Screen only copies to the clipboard, so without a paste target there is no file to save.

In the Snipping Tool, choose Save as and pick JPEG from the file type list. Faster: after snipping, paste straight into this page with Ctrl + V and download the JPG — you skip the Save dialog and choose the quality yourself.

Yes. Use Command + Control + Shift + 4 to copy a selection to the clipboard instead of the desktop, then press Command + V on this page. Command + Shift + 4 alone saves a PNG file, which you can drag onto the page instead.

92 or higher when the capture contains text, so letters keep clean edges. 85 is fine for photos and video frames. The size shown under the preview updates as you move the slider.

No. The clipboard image is converted by your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
