Frequently asked questions

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1,000. 1 g/cm³ = 1 g/mL = 1 kg/L = 1,000 kg/m³, because a cubic metre holds a million cubic centimetres and a kilogram is a thousand grams.

How do I convert kg/m³ to lb/ft³?

Divide by 16.0185 (or multiply by 0.062428). Water at about 1,000 kg/m³ is about 62.4 lb/ft³.

How much does a gallon of water weigh?

Water near room temperature has a density of about 0.998 g/mL, which is 8.33 lb per US gallon (10.0 lb per UK gallon). At its densest, 4 °C, it is 0.99997 g/mL (8.345 lb/gal).

How do I find weight from volume and density?

Mass = density × volume, in matching units. 5 US gallons of a liquid at 7.2 lb/gal weighs 36 lb; 2 m³ of something at 1,500 kg/m³ weighs 3,000 kg.

What is specific gravity?

Specific gravity is density divided by the density of water, so it has no units. In g/cm³ the number is almost the same: a liquid at 0.92 g/cm³ has a specific gravity of about 0.92.
