How pressure conversion works
Pressure is force per area, and every unit here is stored in pascals (1 Pa = 1 newton per square meter). The bar is exactly 100,000 Pa, the standard atmosphere exactly 101,325 Pa, and one pound-force per square inch (psi) is about 6,894.76 Pa. Millimeters of mercury and torr are nearly equal (133.322 Pa); 760 of either make one atmosphere.
Most tire, compressor and hydraulic gauges read gauge pressure, meaning pressure above the surrounding air. Absolute pressure adds about 1 atm (14.7 psi) at sea level. Converting between units does not change which kind you have, so a gauge reading stays a gauge reading.
Worked examples
Tire pressure, psi to kPa and bar
32 psi × 6.89476 = 220.6 kPa, which is 2.21 bar. A European door sticker that says 2.2 bar is 31.9 psi.
psi to atmospheres
100 psi ÷ 14.696 = 6.80 atm. One atmosphere is 14.696 psi and 1.01325 bar.

Common mistakes
- Mixing gauge and absolute pressure. A tire at 32 psi gauge is about 46.7 psi absolute at sea level. Unit conversion keeps the same reference, so don't add 14.7 unless a spec asks for absolute.
- Treating bar and atm as the same. They differ by 1.3%: 1 atm = 1.01325 bar.
- Reading kPa as psi on a dual-scale gauge. 220 on the kPa scale is only 32 psi.
