How volume conversion works

Each unit is stored in liters. The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly 3.785411784 L, and the US cup, pint, quart, fluid ounce, tablespoon and teaspoon are exact fractions of it: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fl oz. The imperial (UK) gallon is a different, larger unit of exactly 4.54609 L, and its pint and fluid ounce differ too.

Metric volume is simpler: 1 liter is 1,000 mL and 1,000 cm³, and a cubic meter is 1,000 liters. The tool multiplies by the source unit's size in liters and divides by the target's.

Worked examples

Bottles, mL to US fluid ounces

A 2 L bottle is 2 ÷ 0.0295735 = 67.63 US fl oz. A 12 fl oz can is 12 × 29.5735 = 354.9 mL, labeled 355 mL.

Buckets and tanks, gallons to liters

A 5-gallon bucket holds 5 × 3.785 = 18.93 L. A 20 L jerry can holds 5.28 US gallons.

Recipes, mL to cups

500 mL ÷ 236.59 = 2.11 US cups. 1 cup is exactly 16 tablespoons, and 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons.

Common mistakes

  • Using a US gallon for a UK figure. An imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons (4.546 L vs 3.785 L). UK fuel economy in mpg looks higher for that reason.
  • Treating US and UK pints as equal. A US pint is 473 mL; an imperial pint is 568 mL.
  • Converting grams to mL as if every ingredient were water. Only water is close to 1 g per mL; flour, sugar and oil are not. For recipes, convert by ingredient on a grams-to-cups tool.
  • Assuming a cup is 250 mL everywhere. The US customary cup is 236.6 mL, US nutrition labels use 240 mL, and Australian and some other metric recipes use 250 mL.
