Liters per 100 km to MPG (L/100km to mpg)

mpg (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km

UK (imperial) mpg = 282.481 ÷ L/100km: 5 L/100km = 56.50 UK mpg, 8 L/100km = 35.31 UK mpg.

The conversion works the same way in both directions because the units are reciprocals: US mpg = 235.215 ÷ L/100km. The constant is 100 × 3.785411784 ÷ 1.609344, from the exact US gallon and international mile in NIST SP 811.

Formula

mpg (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km

Example: 4.5 liters per 100 km = 52.2699 miles per gallon (US).

Good to know

Reading a European, Canadian or Australian spec: those markets quote fuel use in L/100km. 5 L/100km is 47.0 US mpg, 7 L/100km is 33.6 mpg and 10 L/100km is 23.5 mpg.

For UK mpg divide 282.481 instead: 6 L/100km = 47.1 UK mpg but 39.2 US mpg. The 20% gap is just the bigger imperial gallon, not a better car.

Electric and hybrid comparisons: official EV efficiency is published in other units (kWh/100 km or MPGe), so this formula only applies to liquid fuel. For km per litre, 100 ÷ L/100km; for all four units at once, use the fuel economy converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert L/100km to mpg?

Divide 235.215 by the L/100km figure for US mpg (or 282.481 for UK mpg). 8 L/100km → 29.40 US mpg.

What is 6 L/100km in mpg?

6 L/100km is 39.20 US mpg, or 47.08 UK mpg.

What is 10 L/100km in mpg?

10 L/100km is 23.52 US mpg.

Is 5 L/100km good fuel economy?

5 L/100km is 47.0 US mpg — economical for a petrol car; many hybrids are in this range.
