Gigabytes to Terabytes (GB to TB)

Drive makers use SI decimal prefixes, where a terabyte is 10¹² bytes and a gigabyte 10⁹ bytes, so 1 TB = 1,000 GB: divide by 1,000. 2,000 GB is 2 TB. Operating systems that count in binary use 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB (IEC 80000-13; NIST, prefixes for binary multiples). This converter uses the decimal SI value.

Terabytes
0.001

Formula

TB = GB ÷ 1,000 (binary: TiB = GiB ÷ 1,024)

Example: 256 gigabytes = 0.256 terabytes.

Good to know

Why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB: the drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024³ and labels the result 'GB', giving 931.32 GiB. A 2 TB drive shows 1,862.6 and a 4 TB drive 3,725.3. Nothing is missing — it is the same number of bytes in a different unit.

Binary answer: divide GiB by 1,024 for TiB. 1,024 GiB is 1 TiB, which is 1.0995 TB — about 10% larger than a decimal terabyte at this scale.

Cloud and backup plans: 2 TB of cloud storage is 2,000 GB. Backing up 750 GB of photos uses 0.75 TB; a 256 GB phone fully backed up takes 0.256 TB.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB are in 1 TB?

1,000 GB in decimal SI units (what drive makers sell). In binary units, 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB.

Is 500 GB half a terabyte?

Yes. 500 GB is 0.5 TB in decimal units.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Windows reports binary gibibytes but labels them GB. 10¹² bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB = 931.32 GiB.

Is 1,024 GB 1 TB?

1,024 GiB is exactly 1 TiB. In decimal units 1,024 GB is 1.024 TB.
