Quick answer: 1 minute = 60 seconds, 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds, and 1 average year = 365.2425 days = 525,949.2 minutes. To turn minutes into years, divide by 525,949.2.

How time conversion works

Seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks have fixed relationships: 60 s in a minute, 60 min in an hour, 24 h in a day and 7 days in a week. Months and years do not, because calendar months have 28 to 31 days and leap years add a day. This converter uses the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days (31,556,952 s) and an average month of one-twelfth of that, about 30.44 days.

That average is right for long spans such as 'how long is 20 million minutes', where leap years even out. For a specific date range, count calendar days instead: a non-leap year is exactly 525,600 minutes and a leap year is 527,040.

Worked examples

Big numbers, minutes to years

22 million minutes ÷ 60 = 366,667 hours ÷ 24 = 15,278 days ÷ 365.2425 = 41.8 years.

Timesheets, hours to minutes

3.25 hours × 60 = 195 minutes, which is 3 h 15 min. A decimal hour is not minutes: 0.25 h is 15 minutes, not 25.

Seconds to days

1,000,000 seconds ÷ 86,400 = 11.57 days, about 11 days and 14 hours.

Common mistakes

  • Writing decimal hours as clock time. 1.5 h is 1 h 30 min, not 1:50. Use the time to decimal converter for payroll.
  • Using 365 days for long spans. Over decades, the 365.2425-day average year is more accurate; over a specific calendar year, count 365 or 366 days.
  • Treating a month as 30 days in contracts or interest. The average month is 30.44 days, and real months vary; check which convention a document uses.

How to convert minutes to days and years by hand

  1. Divide minutes by 60 to get hours.
  2. Divide hours by 24 to get days.
  3. Divide days by 365.2425 to get average years (use 365 for a calendar year that is not a leap year).
  4. Example: 20,000,000 min ÷ 60 = 333,333 h ÷ 24 = 13,889 days ÷ 365.2425 = 38.0 years.
