How it works
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours.
Going back, the whole number is the hours; multiply the decimal part by 60 for minutes. 8.2 hours is 8 hours and 0.2 × 60 = 12 minutes.
Why payroll uses decimal hours
Pay is hours multiplied by a rate, and you cannot multiply 7:45 by $20 directly. 7.75 × $20 = $155. A common mistake is reading 7:30 as 7.30 hours — it is 7.5 hours, and the difference adds up over a pay period.
