How to use it

Type the number on the label and pick its country. A US 8 is a UK and Australian 12, a German 38, a French and Spanish 40, an Italian 44 and a Japanese 13, which is a medium. The chart below lists every women's size from US 0 to 20, and the men's tables cover suits, jackets and shirt collars.

How the size numbers relate

Women's sizes follow fixed offsets on retailers' cross-reference charts: UK and Australia add 4 to the US size, Germany and Scandinavia add 30, France and Spain add 32, Italy adds 36 and Japan adds 5 (Japanese sizes are odd numbers). The European standard EN 13402 moves labels towards body measurements in centimetres, so check the chest, waist and hip numbers on European labels too.

Men's suits and jackets are sized by chest in inches in the US and UK; Europe adds 10, so a 40 is an EU 50. Dress shirt collars are the neck size in inches in the US and UK and in whole centimetres in Europe, so 15½ is a 39.

Vanity sizing and brand differences

Sizes have drifted larger over the decades, and fast-fashion, designer and outdoor brands all cut differently, so the same body can be two sizes apart across shops. Measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape and compare them with the brand's own chart before ordering from another country.
