How to use it

Pick the system your size is in (or measure your foot and choose foot length), type the size, and every other system is shown at once, rounded the way shops sell them: US and UK in half sizes, EU in whole sizes, Japan in half centimetres.

To measure your foot, stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure both feet in the evening, when they are largest, and use the longer one.

Why the systems disagree

UK and US sizes count barleycorns (⅓ inch) of shoe-last length: a UK adult size is 3 × last length in inches − 25, US men's is one size above UK, and US women's is one and a half sizes above US men's. Continental European sizes count Paris points (⅔ cm) of last length, so EU = 1.5 × last length in cm. Japan and the ISO Mondopoint system skip the last and use the foot itself, in centimetres or millimetres.

The last is longer than the foot to leave room for the toes. This converter uses the standard two-barleycorn (⅔ inch) allowance — the one behind the Brannock Device scale, where US men's size = 3 × foot length in inches − 22. Brands cut their lasts differently, so expect up to a half size of difference in US/UK and a whole size in EU from one maker to the next: always check the brand's own chart when you can.

What is a US men's 10 in UK and EU sizes?

UK 9 and EU 43 (some brands, such as Nike, label it EU 44). The foot length is about 27.1 cm.

How do I convert women's to men's shoe sizes?

In US sizing, subtract 1.5: a women's 8.5 is a men's 7. UK sizes are unisex, so a UK 6 is a UK 6 either way.

What is a US women's 8 in EU?

About EU 39, and UK 5.5.

Are Japanese shoe sizes in centimetres?

Yes. Japanese sizes (JIS S 5037) are the foot length in centimetres, so a 26.5 fits a 26.5 cm foot.

Does this cover children's sizes?

No. Children's US and UK sizes run on a separate scale that restarts after 13, so this converter is for adult sizes only.
