How numbers are written in words

Split the number into groups of three digits from the right. Write each group as a number under 1,000 ("two hundred thirty-four") and follow it with its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion and so on. Hyphenate the tens from twenty-one to ninety-nine (forty-two), and skip groups that are all zeros: 1,000,005 is "one million five".

US style leaves "and" out of whole numbers (one hundred five), because "and" is kept for the decimal point or the cents on a cheque. British English puts it in (one hundred and five); switch it on below if you need that style. Large numbers use the short scale used in the US and the UK today, in which a billion is a thousand million (10⁹).

Writing a cheque

The amount line of a US cheque spells out the dollars and writes the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,234.56 becomes "One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars". Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through the leftover space so nothing can be added. The words are the legal amount, so make sure they match the figures.
